Phootbawl

Today, 67 years ago, Pearl Harbor was attacked. Twenty seven years ago today, Zig Campbell my father passed away. Today the Miami Dolfins played the Buffalo Bulls in the first National Football League game in Canada.

Nothing can be done about about the first two events, but after viewing the game played in the same venue as the Argonuts. For once we can compare. I still prefer the Canadian Football type of game.

Even though I watch nearly every NFL game and it's not unusual for me to be watching three or four games simultaneously, there are certain aspects of the U.S. game I find utterly tedious and less than exciting.

Four downs allows them to proceed, three or four yards a play. That's why they throw all those passes at or behind the line of scrimmage. That's why the defense generally allows them to catch the pass, then they do a deadly tackle. Boring!

The field in the U.S. is just tiny. Punts and even kick offs are usually incredibly boring and/or stupid. Missed field goals and punts into the end zone should be returned or points get scored. The whole idea is to get the ball into the end zone but in the U.S., punts and field goals into the end zone are free shots.

There's lots of other things to complain about but I guess they can't be too serious, else I wouldn't watch most every NFL game played, not to mention all the U.S. college games.

Still, if they have to have different rules, I think it would make much more sense for the NFL to play CFL rules on a CFL-sized field, which would be a much tougher game and the CFL should play NFL rules, which would make for a much easier game.
