Looking at the MP3 player. The little power bar showed none left. New batteries were needed. I bought some more expensive batteries at the dollar store.
This pack had two batteries instead of the normal four. The poignant circumstance is that they did not work as well as the cheapies. Go figure.

Ummm, you DID know all the batteries in the world are made in the same factory in China and only the labels and packaging are different, didn't you?
