Wanna Bet Man?

On the surface it looks like Jim Balsillie lost out to GB again. Well so much for surfaces. Dig just a little deeper.

There lies a point at which the observer eventually notices that Balsillie wins everytime. He failed to buy Pittsburgh... Research in Motion (RIM) stocks went up in price exceeding the value of the amount of that which he would have paid for the Penguins. Everyone in Hamilton loves him.

The NHL, The Toronto Maple Leafs appear like the evil empire. In other words they win, but lose.

Balsillie goes after Nashville. Gary Bettman (GB) blocks the move. To do so GB taps a guy, a convicted fraudster, to counter offer with a loan from the outgoing owner who manages to get a prize franchise in Minnesota. On the surface, GB wins again.

However, Balsillie's company RIM favorably competes with Apple Computers about the I-phone which happened to be getting introduced to the market at the very same time. The value of thwarting the challenge of Apple by RIM, exceeds the value of the lost hockey club. Hamilton loves the guy. Canada loves RIM. So while hockey fails to come to Hamilton RIM wins at the bank on sympathetic loyalty.

In the actual battle, NHL won. But Hamilton is getting really pYssEd. Southern Ontario is beginning to desert the Maple Disbe Leafs. So they won but lost.

Balsillie makes a $212M bid on the Phoenix Coyotes with the caveat that they must be able to move to Hamilton. To the bankrupture court Balsillie set a June 30th date. The judge didn't buy it. Unfortunately for the NHL the judge will throw the team onto the perilous route of an open auction.

The Coyotes in reality are noted to be worth $140M in Forbes, lose $30M dollars per year at least in that sports market. Owe a ton of money. I mean when Balsillie offered $400M any sane man would have called up the looney bin police about the guy. Its bad business. And the myth Balsillie created either accidently or deliberately is that Hamilton would be a thriving sports market when in history it really hasn't.

The bankrupture judge decided on a Monday night to reject the time constrictions of the Balsillie bid because the criteria exceeded the courts ability to deal with the lengthy issues. Like Balsillie doesn't understand this. But Balsillie will let the bid remain regardless until the June 30th date. He really doesn't lose.

When the judge released his decision, earlier that day RIM coincidently announced the release of a new product line. Today the projected earnings for the owners of RIM will many times exceed the value of the bid for the Phoenix Coyotes. Wow I wish I could lose like that.

Balsillie knows business. He understands that from now on, every time the NHL gets into economic trouble he just lays down a bid. He knows he will lose the bid. He also knows that he could go get any other sports franchise (eg. Los Angeles Clippers.) move them to Copps Coliseum or back to Buffalo and literally screw Maple (disbe) Leaf Sports and Entertainment. The strategy would kill the Raptors.

He could have bought all of NASCAR's Petty Enterprises for half the cost of the hockey team and a car in NASCAR will bring more coin to RIM than any NHL Hockey team. Like no matter what the economics are, NASCAR ownership brings more business revenue from television than most other sports. NASCAR would be the best fit for RIM.

With businesses backing out of sponsoring golf tournaments, RIM could invest in sponsorship there with more benefit than owning any NHL team. However, they pay for all the advertising. In the fight with GB, win or lose, Balsillie and RIM benefits from the wide spread publicity.

And in every fight, GB wins but in winning he literally weakens the league. In September, when the Coyotes go on the auction block, the highest bid will be less than $100M. Or the judge could decide to let the NHL wear this. Judge R. Baum might decide, if they can't negotiate with Balsillie, and offers are insufficient to assign ownership and liability to the NHL. Which means they would have to pay off all the Coyotes bills in future, present and past.

This at a time when other teams are facing the same economic difficulty if not a greater degree of difficulty than the Phoenix team. Expect Balsillie to enter the fray yet again. Not to win a team but to torture GB, the NHL and the Maple disbe Leafs. Balsillie now is in an all win position even though GB will continue to think he wins. Every fight strengthens RIM. Every fight weakens the NHL.

Balsillie will likely bid on Florida or Tampa or Atlanta. There are more fires than any fireman can cope with. There is only one Billionaire. And there are so many NHL teams with so many dysfunctional owners. Look at the photo. Balsillie plays hockey, hey he has all his teeth. Gary, Gary, Gary...The game is not hockey stupid, the game is business.

Tomorrow's Cage match...: GB vs. Ham Il Ton

Highway robbery, that's what happened to the City of Hamilton. No one commented on this to this point. Its all about hockey, yet again. No pleasure, just all about pain.

Pittsburgh used to be a steel town too. Hamilton used to be steel town Canada. How ironic the twists of fate as steel town USA celebrates a Stanley Cup. So much the same, yet so much the difference in this path of time.

Look at the time table of the past or as the Kert Rats crowd would say, the alternative time line. Its not a game. Its dynamic string physics and the placement of chance.

Chance that Gary “GB” Bettman decided to block Jim Balsillie's bid to purchase a hockey team. And the same chance that this is the very same team that won this season's Stanley Cup. Had time been kind to Balsillie's time plan, this hockey year just past would have been the first season for the Hamilton Penguins.

Oh the curse... Not only has Hamilton not have a hockey team, they also would have had, but do not have a Stanley Cup. They were robbed by the NHL yet again. Again, again, again, and yes, yet... again.

Mein Kanada ich

Tis a time. Canada so bland and polite. What is the name of Canada even, even.... even?

The USA is named the United States of America. Kinda pompous isn't it? There is the United Kingdom in Britain. Well that's okay in an okay sort of way. Many countries are the United this or that. They could have Federation of... , or Republic of... , Empire of … but Canada is plain ol' Canada.

In the first century, Canada was officially known as “The Dominion of Canada”. Australia of the time was another “Dominion” but that part of the official name didn't really permeate. I mean people in the United States call their land the USA. Canada is a nice name but carries little impact in other languages.

A couple of us intellectual types engaged in a brain storm in Moss Park the other day. Its much like the MacKenzie Institute of Conservative dunces but this group doesn't qualify because none are liars, embezzlers, politicians, wealthy, or claim to be intelligent. We just throw ideas around mostly because we are way too old to even toss a softball.

Now admittedly, this was my original idea. But most ideas are germinated in collegiate engagements. So the credit belongs to the Moss Park Institute of Political Prestructuring. Or MOPIPP.

The idea is to convince Canadians, and their little brown nosed political animals to return the first name of Canada back to The Dominion of Canada. This is right out of Kert Rats. They used the term to refer to a collection of aggressive peoples known as “the Dominion.”

Using the name has that not so subtle impact. I've tried it out. Say to yourself how Americans would say. I am from the “USA”. Or the British, use Brits I am from Britain. Now say to yourself, I am from the “Dominion”.

The name pukes authority. It has that ring to it. It smacks down USA or American. We are the Dominion. Its better than Canadian which gets tired and Germans spell it with a “K” which is annoying. Annoying to a point only. Kanada looks better in print than that woosey Canada. But when a German says Kanada you just know its spelled wrong.

Ichte ist ein Dominion. Now that has cache.

Its time for the people of Canada to re-embrace the Dominion of Canada. A new political effort must be made to restore the proper name of Canada. Lets get back that Dominion.

The title in this blug entry is longer than

the text.

Kert Rats in backwards

I've always marvelled about the inability of Americans to see the forest for the forest. Such is the case with Paramount Inc., and their television money maker the Star Trek franchise. America goes around embracing the ideals expressed by the series creator, the now deceased Gene Roddenberry.

American military power projects the political and economic philosophy of the United States which is Capitalism. They still mount a covert war against communist insurgents around the world.

American religious zeal for a fundamentalist Christianity expressed itself in the election of George W. Bush into the Presidential office. This type of intolerant Christianity isn't being that much of being a follower of Christ than it is a worship of Capitalism under the cloak of being the word of God.

Now a lot of fans of Star Trek are politically very Conservative. Its a real paradox. Those who claim to be Liberals of today tend to find the television series revolting. Again a paradox.

Lets look at the basic philosophy of Star Trek:

1. Basic human rights.
2. No money.
3. Religious tolerance, indeed no religion at all.
4. Freedom of speech.
5. Freedom of association.
6. Freedom from hunger.
7. Full employment.
8. Group actions and decision making.
9. Group benefits with equal shares.
10. Peaceful resolutions.
11. Free health.
12. Free education
13. Free legal access
14. Blind and swift justice
15. Equality of sexes.
16. No racism.
17. Free will.

Now this list constitutes most of the philosophy, the ideal society conceived by Star Trek writers. And its not Capitalism. These are all the tenets of Socialism and Communism.

Americans tend to knock the latter political tenets without ever reading about them. And this is what is astounding. They will not read about Socialist ideas because Socialism is un-American. Perversely as a result comes forward that socialism, the idea that Americans claim to loathe, is the society of their favorite science fiction.

A Riving in art

Nothing causes perplexification like the social identity of the United States. Your intrepid filosofer went to a Star Trekkie Convention in the way back machine.

I mean this was a long time ago. And it seems like it. It isn't one of those memories that one wishes to be involved with all the time. You know like the memory of a warm fire on a cool April night waiting with blitzed buddies for the smelt to decide to crawl up a creek and fuck their little shiny skulls off. Not like that one.

It is a memory that comes up like acid reflux during a hot dream. The thought of doing a blygge on Star Trek did this. Yes I went to a Star Trek convention where fans of the dream assembled with dollars in their pockets. Paramount Co. kindly sending shill actors to it to assist in lifting those dollars from the assembled saps. In many ways it was like those smelt fishes except with a stupider class of beasts.

While I was there, a thought popped into my head. Like this happens from time to time especially at major intersections with four phase traffic lights. Green, yellow, red and idea. One time I spent a whole twenty minutes at one of those intersections before deciding to cross because the lights were stuck on idea. The irony with the idea shade of light is that it is often a problem. Ideas frequently run against the traffic.

An idea like that tends to mull around. I might have written about this before. This is entirely likely. Such a fantastic concept means its worth recycling. Its one of the essential fundamental “R's” of environmentalism: Recycle, Re-use, Remake, Regurgitate and Rewrite.

Now comes another startling Revelation. I suddenly Realize that I spent so long in this blygge trying to Remember how the concept came about is that I must end this blygge entry in order to keep conceptual continuity and the abbreviated length that blygge Readers demand. I went on too long about banning bicycles is one such complaint.

Think that was torture huh. Long, long? It was only three thousand words long which is the average piece length of a magazine article twenty years ago. Computerization seems to help humans a little but the one bad aspect from it is that it has shortened the ability to concentrate on something for a long time. This has also shortened the average shit time in the bathroom by two minutes to the eight minute wipe off from the more satisfactory ten minute period.

In the case of the banning of the bicycle piece a few days ago, I tried to keep it concise but as it turned out there was a lot of aspects, pro and con arguments that assembled themselves to be described in detail to defend that particular thesis. The final thing that threw me off on that blygge from last weekend was the complaint came from a person who texts my phone and could not deal with the fact that one had to stay within a haiku of 140 characters. His ideas cut short by a telephone company constantly aggravates him. Like I am too long. Alas back to the issues.

Now the actual blygge about Star Trek and the USA must be written apart from this because after Review I suddenly Realize that I must truncate this one to maintain an essay type continuity. The topic evolved mechanically to explain that the concept came legitimately from the Rather disgusting factual memory that the conceptual envelope of the idea came at a Star Trek Convention a decade and a half ago.

Time on Repetitive brain injury. Okay here is the truncatilization...

Lame reasons

I won't be commenting on the Phoenix Coyotes decision today. I have good reasons.

I won't be commenting on the dilemma that democracy faces when it chooses political leaders. I have really good reasons.

I won't be analyzing the findings of any study relating to Black Holes. Quatumly I have good reasons for that time revisitation string of nonrelevancies.

I will not be commenting on the extreme lack of relevance of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation which seems hell bent on loosing listeners for the sake of becoming "cool". I have no good reason for delaying that comment because, I think I just sort of let that feline out of the gunny sack.

I won't be commenting on US Foreign Policy. I actually got a reason which has everything to do with, I really don't give a crap, they wouldn't listen anyway. I once told them that the Spanish had nothing to do with the destruction of the USS Maine. So much for preaching.

I won't be commenting on the scandals in the provincial government. Lets just say, business as per normal.

I won't be commenting on how warm and sunny and nice it is sitting in Moss Park today. Its better than making blig entries. Action saves words. Those who listen freeze and get wet on lonely lake coasts. Those are good reasons.

Price of ham?

There should be apologies to the world. World information including gets stifled when the only conversations revolve around a pending decision in an Arizona bankruptcy court. Its astounding.

Everyone is having an orgasm about the chance for another NHL hockey team in Southern Ontario. Except the Witches of ACC. They will sue everyone.

To date the computer club still gets shrift due to the pyrotechnical conflagration on the second floor residences. There might be temporary housings in the Employment Resource Centre but the funding agency will insist on shorter hours.

The Buddhist thing with the laundry. I am cleaning it with my mental powers. Just wish I didn't have such a dirty mind.

----===----

Latest news in the Phoenix Phiasco. Moving a NHL hockey team to Hamilton may cost better than $400M. Which is bizarre. The whole fuckin' city aint worth $400M.

Possible interruptions in blaggerphery

The blag may be interrupted every so often. To date there has been a regular flow of crap emitted from this web hole. So they say.

Well some smoker fell asleep while being stone-ated. It is the classic four part criteria for combustion.

1. Oxygen

2. Source of ignition

3. Fuel

4. Idiot

Fortunately the person survived with serious injuries. First he survived. And second, we have some one to blame and punish. That part is all good.

One fireman was injured but thankfully is okay.

To date the computer club is closed. It may partially re-open tomorrow. As far as I can gather four machines are water damaged. So more on this later.

Educator

An educator is a person who imparts knowledge to other people. What does the person do? Educate.

Logic here. So if a stupid person spreads negative knowledge to other people, that person must be a Stupidor.

Most politicians would fall in the later of course. It is the fringe benefit of democracy. Totalitarian governments execute people for making jokes at their fearless leader's expense. Democracy may be less efficient but we gots lots to laugh at.

Obama must be a grinning politician and Stupidor of the first merit. The poor USA has economic troubles and he flies into Paris to meet the French President Sarcastic and give his family a shopping holiday. I don't want to know just how much that Air Force One costs to fly. I mean California would be out of debt on that flight alone.

Now this guy came into power with lots of promises. But six months after, eeehhh!

The list.

Gitmo... Still there.

Health... Still crap.

Economics... To the financials ... Opened the doors to Fort Knox. And who said you couldn't rob it.... To the people... Things are looking up!!!

Foreign affairs... Hilary... A person who knows little.

Iraq... They now have a timetable to make a timetable.

Afghanistan... Suddenly aware that after eight years the US is losing the war to rag headed ruffians... Ooops.

NAFTA... See ya afta.

"OoOOH EEEEEaaa. Aint he a silver tongued devil!" ... Jed Clampett (allegedly)

-----------------

Of course this would be unfair to just pick on the poor US. You should see what we got (ref. Canada). Our Stupidor is better than yours.

I mean he inserted a whole bunch of trashy attack ads on the leader of the opposition, Ignatief (geshundheit). And his approval rating went down. Go figure. Now that's stupid.

Two lane slack top

No neutral ground

Use of the bicycle provides the exception. Normally one tries to adopt a distant neutral stance. Dispassionate, and very legal describes the best approach. That neutral attitude must dominate most of the time on a wide range of topics, but the passion surrounding bicycles doesn't allow such neutrality.

Very few political topics involve such raw emotion. Supporters of bicycle use in this nation, access the political ear to a point far in excess to their environmental benefit, social impact or political standing. They exploit the paternalism of civic authority figures. Universal childhood memories associated with bicycle use in all North American people fortify the false arguments.

Bicycles are regarded as the transport of youth despite the statistically verified inherent danger of injury. By most bicycling remains a recreation, and not more. Bicycle use joins the ranks of motherhood issues. Numerous cycle lobbyists exploit that social memory.

To this point, I am not exactly a person poised in a neutral position. Many friends are passionate users of the bicycle. And, I like and respect them. Yet my close proximity to the bicyclists lobby allowed me to examine their arguments. Writing such conclusions will likely mean a loss of those treasured friendships. Like most reformers they are unforgiving of those who appear to oppose their position. They personalize their political thought.

Their belief in bicycle use is that irrational. Their enthusiasm is welded to the childhood myth involving the bicycle. Although small in raw numbers, the cyclists present a formidable political force in Toronto. While it appears that there are dozens of local cycling organizations, in reality there are very few active cyclists since they often sign on as members of more than one organization. Usually on every public demonstration the very same few people show up. They are politically astute. Members hang around the city hall like gulls on a fish trawl.

In that closeness, I found that the politicians tend to listen to them. Usually cyclists win every political argument because few people in authority do not wish to tackle with the obvious inadequacies of the pro-bicycle lobby's arguments.

In the study for this article, I found that specific facts and observations cycle lobbyists present to advance the cause of bicycles, paradoxically are the same arguments against bicycles. It depends on viewpoint. The same material that can be used to present their argument provides equal fertile grounds to actually ban the use of the the bicycle.

Bicycle lanes

The latest political confrontation in the city of Toronto involves the deletion of a fifth lane on the north and south running Jarvis Street. The disappearing lanes converting to become two dedicated bicycle lanes. Jarvis Street is a very heavily used access road in and out of the downtown core. It needs more lanes, not less.

Bicycle lobbyists persist in using the two shoe argument. While one argument is vehicle safety, the other shoe is almost always involves the environment. Bicycle lanes do provide a level of protection to cyclists on streets. But there are so few cyclists compared with other vehicular traffic, that even a substantial increase in cycling ridership will never cover the deleterious environmental impact on the local air quality or overall safety due to the added traffic congestion.

Toronto clearly understood the advantages when it allocated bicycle lanes to parallel street Sherbourne, that is just two blocks east of Jarvis street. Sherbourne Street gets heavy use in the freshness of spring but the rest of the year that artery doesn't exactly stream with the usage of bicycles promised by theory. Winter climate, and rain pushes that use down dramatically. Torontonians by the vast majority, are fair weather cyclists. Most of the time, those established bicycle lanes are under utilized.

The theory is that bicycle lanes promotes increased use of the bicycle. This theory remains only anecdotal and totally unsubstantiated by any third party neutral study. All studies in that regard carry the support of the bicycle lobby. Such lanes do not cause the proportional increase equal to the polluting increase caused by the constriction of traffic.

Bicycle lanes will constrict the flow of traffic on Jarvis. Estimates conclude that 27,000 cars use Jarvis on a weekday. The installation of bicycle lanes create a constriction, which will increase rush hour travel times by two extra minutes. The usual travel time is about ten minutes. Bicycles use should approximately arrive at the 600 mark with the creation of the lanes. 100 cyclists per day were estimated to use the corridor previously.

Statistics are another area of information misuse used by bicycle advocates. Politicians embrace these deceitful promise and subjective statements because it is a motherhood type issue. Supporting the lanes gives the impression that they are doing something about the environment. The impact causes more traffic gridlock and greater air pollution. Bicycle lanes are a useless appendage to the municipal plan.

Irony of math

Here lies the irony. Those very same numbers used by cyclists to advance their cause are, the same statistics that can be used in the argument to ban bicycles from every public road.

In every single statement issued by the Toronto Cycling lobbyists, it seems they mark the accident but not fault. One common attitude amongst all this very small advocacy is a universal hatred of cars beyond normal logical bounds. The bicycle lobby always finds fault with the automobiles, never the cyclist.

In recent breakdown of bicycle accident statistics published in the Toronto Star recently, the lobby convinced the journalists to support the bicycle lanes by obscuring critical information. Only two accidents of bicycles involved fatalities. The rest covered the entire city area with accidents and those accidents incurring injury. They advanced their position with favorable numbers only, without presenting all the data.

In other studies where the breakdowns of accidents occur, it was found that almost half of the bicycle accidents involved the cyclists use of sidewalks. Cyclists ran into right turning cars. The bikes came into intersections from the sidewalks. Or the cyclists ran into pedestrians. This breakdown wasn't included in the Toronto Star report. It would be extremely unfavorable to the bicycle lobby and the story. It is a sample of very poor journalism to let the advocates guide the story.

Statistics can mislead. In all the United States figures, bicycles seem to have a lower fatality rate than cars but a far higher serious injury rate. The problem in comparing fatality rates is that the single accident with cars can include multiple fatalities while each bicycle accident has a single fatality. Further to the issue is that the automobile travels on highways at much higher rates sustaining more serious injuries but at an injury rate lower than cycling accidents. Per unit of distance, per period of time, the bicycle injury rate is almost double that of cars. Using such figures one must adjust for the reality. After some study, I can testify that the fatality rate for bicycle accidents under 40km/hr exceed the cars fatality rate at the same speeds.

People in an automobile are more likely to survive injury free in a low speed crash such as found in parking lots. Also very troubling is the lack of a world standard in collecting global statistics between jurisdictions. One can conclude that the accident statistics involving bicycles and pedestrians are tremendously skewed because many of these low speed accidents are not reported. And often those fatalities are called pedestrian fatalities not fatalities charged to bicycle use.

Also, there is no legal mandatory reporting of bicycle accidents like there is for automobiles. Many low speed automobile accidents aren't reported. When a cyclist falls of the bike on a sidewalk and scrapes a knee that injury is never reported. Indeed the fact that an injury comes from bicycle fall such a fact is often never charted by the hospital emergencies or first aid clinics.

The cyclists in the cyclist lobby groups know that the accident rate for bicycles is far greater than reported. The average cycle courier suffers frequent injuries from their professional use of bicycles. And injury free accidents are almost never counted. By far and away if a bicycle accident is reportable or not, I've yet to hear where the cyclist admits fault.

Abuse of the social contract

And here lies one real bugaboo about the use of bicycles. While automobile laws are rigidly enforced cyclists abuse their traffic laws constantly. Very few cyclists obey the traffic laws on a ride. Even bicycle police ride on sidewalks, cross lawns, go up the wrong way on one ways, fail to come to full stop at intersections. And they are the police.

The most egregious law abuse I saw recently was at a Toronto Cyclist demonstration at city hall. They paraded on bikes onto the square. After across Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square, moving pedestrians out of the way, to the front doors of City Hall, these cyclists rolled out a fake bike lane made of old roofing tar-paper .

Nathan Phillips Square is supposed to a pedestrian use only gathering area. Were they a legal protest, they should have dismounted and walked onto the square. They knew cycling onto the square was wrong. Didn't bother them at all. They broke the law regarding the safety of pedestrians to protest the abuse of safety for cyclists by cars. They want bicycle lanes running the length of Bloor. And the demonstration featured the presentation of a petition to the city politicians with no apologies to pedestrians.

There was little police presence for the demonstration beyond the quizzical looks of the normal security guards. I doubt they had the required permit to have a demonstration. In all my time, I have never seen cars drive onto Nathan Phillips Square to protest the lack of downtown parking. The bicycle lobby gets away with anything.

So here lies the heart of an issue. Cyclists want to use streets designed for the efficient movement of car traffic. And in turn, allocate dedicated lanes for use by unregistered, unplated vehicles by users who are not licensed, insured, or subject to vehicular safety regulations. Cyclists pay little or no road tax, energy tax, or tax of any kind. Use of these paved streets are gratis. They even get free parking.

Lobbyists want to use bicycles with no applications of the same legal sanctions applied to motor based vehicles. A driver with a suspended license can use a bicycle on the same road used by vehicles that this person was banned from. Indeed a lot of bike riders drink and ride. Every impaired charge applied to a cyclist usually stands up, cyclists pay a fine, or spend a short time in jail, lose their driver's license if they have one, cyclists simply hop on a bicycle the day after their punishment expires with no fear or sanction. Police prefer chasing cars rather than cyclists.

The worst punishment a cyclist incurs is jail time. Police rarely enforce traffic laws effecting bicycles. How do we know? Well when a cyclist gets a speeding ticket, that's news. It makes news or the rumor mill because catching, charging and convicting a cyclist is an exception not the rule.

There is a special license each for motorcyclists, for professional drivers, for truck drivers, for schoolbus drivers and more. There is none for bicyclists, yet they insist on having a special lane on major routes where other vehicles must meet safety standards, be insured, and be happy to provide tax monies for the maintenance of those roads. They get special treatment in so many ways.

Pedal power cyclists also don't want to share. Moped type vehicles including the recently introduced electric scooter presently have the right to also use those lanes. But the cyclist lobby has recently filed a protest about that also. The electric scooters become more popular, are an environmental gem but the cyclists don't like them.

Active Transportation

One avenue of advocacy is the use of the bicycle for transport of goods into the city core. It is a movement called Active Transport. The theory is that cargo movements into the city core must be made by human powered vehicles. The position does reduce carbon emissions in the city core. But using the factors and numbers supplied by that lobbyist group and Revenue Canada, one can demonstrate that overall and indirectly that humans are poor power converters of energy. Active transportation advocates managed to get a taxable allowance for energy use that car driving couriers have.

Its all in the math. This Canada Revenue discount on the gross income is equivalent to $15.00 per day. It is for energy delivered to the human as food. Food it should be pointed out has one of the highest energy foot prints on the store shelves. Fuel is used to fertilize, til, spray, harvest, process, transport, refrigerate, house, and display food product. And the food must be consumed as most comes out as crap or lost in other human bio activities. So humans are inefficient energy converters.

The Active Transport cyclist travels a bit better than 100km per day. A 4 cylinder car on the other hand does better than 200km per day. The Active Transport carries no more than an average of 15 Kg at any one time over that distance. A car can carry usually 50 to 500kg over the whole distance of its travel.

Usually the fuel costs for the car at 99 cents per litre over that 100 km distance is about $7 dollars. So a bike delivering the capability of moving the average 15kg over 100k at double the rate of a car carrying the same amount. When the larger cargo capability is included, the car becomes far more efficient transport including the energy foot print, than the single bicycle. It would take 33 cyclists to carry the 500kg over 100km. Only one car and driver is used.

To move that material, would cost Revenue Canada $231 dollars on lost taxable income in the energy discount versus the seven dollars declared by a car. What is worse, is that 33 bicyclists on the roads do not curtail traffic congestion especially since according to accident statistics half of those vehicles are going to use sidewalks on their journey at 66 times the likelihood that an injury will occur using the US traffic accident statistics.

While a member of Active Transportation groups, in a study of the issue I presented a comment that bicycles were unsuitable to be a cargo carrying vehicle in the present configuration. Bicycles possess a high center of gravity. The greater the weight destabilizes the vehicle. The rider must balance the bike and the load at the same time.

As a generality an ordinary rider can cope with about 18Kg carried in a back pack. Saddle bags on the rear can extend that weight carrying capability about 300pounds. Unfortunately, modern bicycles lack sufficient sturdiness in mechanical design to sustain those loads over long distances. Bicycles tend to breakdown due to the very high loads on a very fragile frame. Time is lost on repair on bicycle movements exceeding the on journey breakdowns of the automobile. A bicycle are more likely to suffer a mechanical delay enroute than cars.

I found that there were better environmentally sound, human powered inventions more capable than bicycles. They were tricycles. These devices are available today at about the same cost as a high priced bicycles. Yet couriers of the City of Toronto use few, if any of these vehicles for standard delivery. One reason is that they don't go fast enough to suit cyclists. The second reason is that they have very poor snow characteristics. They get stuck easily. Bicycles can be carried across snow banks with the cargo in the backpack.

And that is the reality of Active Transport heavy machines. It only works well in snow free environments. Even the numbers of cyclists decline in snow conditions. This is offset for cars because cars can move faster because all traffic is down. If one can get downtown during heavy snowfalls one finds very few traffic delays due to the lower numbers of vehicles. While Active Transport types of vehicles do reduce pollution the solution to clean air is to convert those vehicle designs to alternative power sources such as hydrogen or electric sources.

So here we have bicycles as only one way but not the major way of getting pollutants out of the air. However the design of the vehicle is meant to deliver an unburdened person rapidly and efficiently. Cargo and freight designs are not competent when the major motive force is human power alone.

Live long and pay monthly

The last issue concerning bicycles has already been outlined but must be revisited. That issue is insurance. These vehicles possess no major insurance support framework to pay for accidents or social liabilities. Any vehicle using publicly supported, and publicly maintained streets should have some sort of insurance. Its not a complicated demand. The vast majority of bicyclists are not insured for that activity.

Cyclists want to use those roads without operator's license, without safety inspection, without plates, without insurance, without adequate personal protection, and without sanction of law. Cyclists do not want to pay extra despite the heightened level of injury due to bicycle operation.

Here is the kicker. If bicycles were introduced today, and not in the world of the mid-1800s few jurisdictions would welcome the invention. Bicycles would be declared unsafe vehicles and banned from public roads. The rates of injury are high. No insurance company would issue the proper insurance because the vehicles do not meet modern safety standards.

Banning bikes would reduce accidents for motor vehicles and a safer environment for pedestrians. Proportionally a majority of pedestrians complain about bicycles on sidewalks rather than cars on streets. Banning bikes saves health costs. The values of the savings exceed the minor environmental benefits gained from cycling.

Money saved by the reduction in health costs due to elimination and allocated to renewable energy development would do more for the environment than treating bicyclists like special citizenry. Banning bikes would reduce car insurance costs. Regardless of fault, cyclists almost always incur injuries in auto bicycle collisions which means excess medical costs.

In many ways the Toronto Cyclists should be thanked. Without their advocacy of bicycle lanes using questionable statistics, this study would not have been done. Cyclists in Toronto and other urban environments have had about 120 years to clean up the misuse of bicycles. They want special favors but give none in return. One favor would be to clean up their act. Because at this point there is a very viable alternative answer to the bicycle problem. The only socially efficient and cost effective solution to the bicycle problem is the simple one. Ban the bicycle.

Thursday, a Thursday

Bonnie Raitt bears no relation to Lisa and probably glad of it. Lisa forgot her homework at the national network of CTV.

Included in that set of homework documents was details of the Chalk River nuclear boondoggle. The Cornservatives claimed that the previous Liveral administration mishandled the file. The Cornservatives set themselves to exceeding the high standard of ineptness.

The real questions present themselves. While everyone wants someone fired for forgetfulness several issues awake.

First, the assistant that tendered an appropriate letter of resignation, be rehired and assigned to do clerical work in Chalk River. Why waste talent.

Second, forgetting those documents is bad enough but who came up with the bright idea of carrying those documents on their person outside the office. Some of those documents whether incriminating or not, were classified papers.

Third, haven't these Cornservative brainiacs ever caught up with technology of this century. If secret data must be carryed outside the office at the very least, let it be carried on an encrypted USB Flash Drive. Hint, people can read words on white paper. One is less likely to forget loptaps and a pin drive carried separately on a thin cable around one's neck.

Fourth, Harper sure knows how to pick them. He should resign. This is the second technologically challenged cabinet minister in his administration to forget their homework. Detention needed.

Piano

At the drop-in for a free coffee. Somebody on the frigging piano. Noise.

Why is it, those who can't play, play. Those who can play, don't. Especially at times like this.

Two, Four. Six. not Eight.

Change of pace. Pace. Race. Race pace. NASCAR. Tired racing series suffering from the woesy woes.

NASCAR appears to be losing its way. And its simple. In the beginning, before the green flag dropped. NASCAR began with racing everyman's car. A hopped up virgin of the car you drove on the street, raced for the checker with the other guys car.

The decline of the American Auto industry seems to follow the highs and lows of NASCAR. Over the last ten years NASCAR abandoned its fundamental reason for being. It no longer is a technological research tool of the auto industry. The cars are all alike.

Originally NASCAR wanted every car maker to be competitive. They achieved it. But they have gone too far. Its now very boring.

For the longest time I had hoped that NASCAR would abandon the carburized V-8 for the mainstay of its racing engines. Almost every common car either has a type of 6 cylinder or 4 cylinder engine.

They would spark almost a massive curiosity as to the racing for these engines. V-8's are almost always used for trucks. And those engines are almost always fuel injected or diesel fueled. NASCAR grew out of the social activity of the North American car culture. Its changes on the racetrack effected every road car. Returning to that mission would renew NASCAR.

Changing to a six cylinder format would allow more variance in engine designs. Changing to a fuel injection mode could provide almost the same racing speeds although on the big tracks like Talledega, Daytona, Michigan and Texas the top speeds would be reduced into the safety margin.

Going to the 6 cylinder, permitting different block designs, would court the interest and more funding from car makers. It would also provide the format for the elimination of the restrictor plate and the dangerous killing crashes that device creates.

June First... The third greatest day in Canadian history.

June 1st, 2009.

I am looking up and down Queen Street. The Moss Park armory looks quiet and undisturbed. No US Tanks.

Pinch me. Today when my fellow Canadians cross the US border, show your passport. You are truly a foreigner, like a Mexican. ***

To the USA guys.

American Revolution 1776-2009, defeat.

War of 1812 - 2009, defeat.

War on Terror 2001-2009, defeat.

***And don't kid yourself... Someday soon... those people without a commercial border pass... will have to apply to the US Consulate for a visitor's visa. Its coming... Its coming.

Douane douane day

He didn't read the document. He signed it. But, he didn't read it.

At last Monday's panel conference at Toronto's Metro Convention Centre, former ambassador to them, Frank Mckenna, stated that Canadians feel slighted about the new rule. Former President Bill Clinton said he only heard about the passport requirement the other day.

The audience of 6000 souls also heard from the recently formerized President George W. Bush. "I will be frank with you, Frank, "Bush said,"I don't know about the passport issue."

But a week later, a dream is about to occur. Sometime ago I wrote that if the Americans did insist on passports, it would finally signal the official end of the 1776 American Revolution and the defeat of the Americans in the War of 1812. Grandmother always opined. "Don't chew your cabbage twice."

Screw you grandma. I am gonna have too for the sake of literal continuity as outlined in Strunk's what'ever Style book for Urinalists. Mark tomorrow June 1st, as the greatest day to occur in North America.

The Declaration of Independence purged venom at proto-imperial Britain. Something to do with Tea, Boston and a horse riding bell ringer. The stated goal outlined in this document was the secession from British rule of all British North American colonies.

During that conflict and the later War of 1812 Americans defined their United States but after numerous invasion attempts of Upper and Lower Canada and the Canadian Maritime colonies they came up short on achieving that goal.

An aside here. Lucky a couple of those armed attempts was led by a General Benedict Arnold. A brilliant commander tempered by doubts lacked motivations.

There were suggestions immediately after the American Civil War, to the effect that it would be a shame to disband such a combat ready force like the Union Army. Invade Canada and complete the liberation of the North American colonies.

One of the policies of hope for the USA's war aims was to make the border invisible and court Canadians to feeling close to the spirit of America. Passports were never employed as long as the hope for the absorption of the Canadian provinces had a chance. The imposition of a passport rule meant that Canadians would finally be recognized as foreigners. Tomorrow, June 1st, 2009, Canada finally gets full independence.

Tomorrow, June 1st, 2009, the American Revolution officially ends. Tomorrow, June 1st, 2009, Canada can finally declare victory over the war aims of the War of 1812. Tomorrow, June 1st, 2009 Canada finally becomes fully an independent nation.

Arena problems

Simple observations can approximate some on-going stories. For instance, on my way into the breakfast place I saw this parked behind Moss Park Arena.

Obvious conclusions arise. Serious problems with the ice making machine here.

Know how to do it

My long dead father, survivor of the Great Depression, had one favorite phrase. "Tory times, are tough times."

Repeating it about once a month in all sorts of conversational twists, it became the solid capstone of his formidable debating skills. Such a phrase hangs with some truth. Canadian Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, proved that this week when he grimly stated that next year the federal government will post a $50 Billion dollar deficit.

Laminated on this Conservative announcement lies the foundation of political policy, which is that only they, not the tax and spend Liberals, are best suited to run the country. The problem lies again not in the honest intention of Conservatives but in their genetic inability to improvise, emphathize, and innovate.

Human species divide inherently into two basic and equal divisions one with a Conservative in attitude and the other Liberal. Yet a lot of the higher thinking species also divide into those same two divisions. Sound purpose clasps this natural observation and its all based on hard wired genetics. These species also have the same divisions. Understanding this one can see how this serves the entire species.

The cowardly conservatives maintain those natural activities that work. They maintain the position on the escalator of genetic progress. Liberal thinking beasts explore and improvise to allow the species to expand into new areas of environment and adaptations. Flaherty while trumpeting the Conservative values, champions this philosophical view by proving it.

In both the USA and Canada and Britain Liberals in power lead a breathing, dynamic self sustaining economy. The Conservatives constantly post high deficits and economic declines. Yet, the business community and military community insists on supporting Conservative governments.

Stephen Harper Conservatives fully aware of their failings decided to launch a serious media campaign bent on discrediting Michael Ignatief. This campaign of hate advertising is meant to discredit Ignatief. The secondary goal of the ads aims at deflecting the attention of voters away from the patently obvious. Conservatives employ ineffective economic policies.

Conservatives don't know anything about business economics. Liberals do.

Lids

Its amazing how one equates political freedoms. My advocacy for change in Great Britain does not include wrecking the economies that have managed to intertwine themselves somewhat successfully.

The working political model is the same ones adapted by the progeny of the British Empire, specifically Canada and Australia. Indeed one part of Canada was allowed to vote for secession twice. And twice remaining in the union won. Quebec is viewed as a partner.

Still they had the right to make that choice. It makes for a better partnership. And looking at all the material from modern day Scotland, that's all they want. At the end of the day, I believe that even though theoretically independent. People on all the British Isle will want to remain in close association economically and yes politically.

This model has worked in Switzerland for five hundred years as a federation. It has four distinct cultures together by choice not by monarchist or political decision. The present day United Kingdom could adapt the models their nation building created. Nor does it mean any less for the Monarchy. Two members of the Commonwealth still use the British Monarch as a head of state.

For instance, England would have a state parliament then create another smaller federal parliament in a new federal capital. This would give the cultures of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ulster state parliaments and a new central capital district outside London. This type of partnership would functionally work better than the present Imperial model where junior parliaments exist but all are found in the English parliament.

What is disturbing about the Scottish nationalism is that it is far more alive (about seventy percent for) than in Canada's province of Quebec (about 40%). Its amazing that the lid has been on this for almost three centuries.

nee Alba

I am the descendant of refugees from the thousand years of conflicts with the Angles. Ask the children of the exiled too. The Treaty of Union was good for the present day Lairds and Lords but did nothing for the common Scot...

As one can see, most of the bad things happened after 1700. It was a good thing that the BBC stopped at 1600. After that, the only argument for Union appears economic with an obedient enslaved population, the very same greedy rational for the Clearances.

Deported populations went onto North America and Australia to build vibrant independent nations, with class equality, religious freedoms. A majority of those pioneers were Scots, not French, not English. ...And these Nations were modeled on the hopes and aspirations so wanted for Alba. ...

Most of the generations have forgotten the homeland, and the supplicating toadies that were left behind. We are the last of the free. Scotland is only the place of, not the spirit of Wallace. ...For example, the first Prime Minister of Canada was a MacDonald.

Interior freedom cannot be legislated, created or controlled. ...We the last of the true Scots build a Scottish independence far from its shores, free from the clutches of Union. I would not want my ancestral homeland to have less political freedom than I enjoy.

Gordon Duncan Campbell - Toronto, Canada

Last of the free

The '45 while inconsequential in the history of United Kingdom, for Scotland it was a dramatic pivot point. Clearly the Scots were not militarily strong enough to completely overturn the English crown.

No matter. If you're a Scot, ask yourself. What would have it been like today, if the Jacobite Rebels had won then? ... No Clearances. No deportations. No Scottish regiments serving the British Imperial Army. No Empire to begin with.

No United States of America and thus no Napoleon. Its amazing how one minor event weaves its way into history and today's events.

Forecast

Summer still tries to crash into the calendar. Temperatures continue to be below the seasonal norm. So the forecasters say.

I've come to the conclusion that sportswriters and sports broadcasters possess a more faulty forecast ability. Despite the cliches about changing coaches, in the final four of the Stanley Cup chase, three of the four National Hockey League teams involved had coaching changes this very year.

Further, none of those teams were placed in a possible playoff position at the points of the transitions. The only consistent forecaster in the pantheon of sports "experts" still remains Bob McCowen of the Fan590. Not that he is an expert but he gains in percentages by simply being a contrary cuss. For instance, he forecast the Jays to finish with 90 wins this season.

So when knocking the weather forecasters simply remember that if they go, the weather will be done by sports experts. And that would be true climatic horror.

Black has no appeal

The Conrad Black got good news this week. The Supreme Court will hear his appeal. However the assizes aren't until the fall. The decision not until a year from now.

The Toronto Sun conducted a survey with the question being. "Do you support the appeal"?

83 percent voted no.

Colleagues?

The prefix "co" implies a connection, a partnership. For instance, a single person operates. And two people co-operate.

I work with a colleague. But if I work alone... Then I am a league? If I have a collision then its with another car. If I put it in a ditch... Shouldn't that be a lision???

Honest officer. Its a lision.

Mulroney's gulch

Mulroney says he's the most investigated former Prime Minister in history. Out of frustration for the most part. Its his own fault. He took money from a person who possessed a reputation for being a scammer.

In his own defence, Mulroney stated that he didn't do anything to earn that money. That's one hell of an admission. He said that it wasn't fraud or an illegal payment. He made the first set of ethics rules for parliamentarians.

The heat would've been off but about a decade ago Mulroney proceeded to lift two million dollars from the Canadian taxpayer in a lawsuit which stated that he did not receive illegal payments. Sounds like a guy who would blame the church key for failing to remove a twist off cap off a beer bottle.

Do onto others what Deuteronomy

Being the solutions guy. If I were Mayor of TWNBMB. The question is how to use resources, present facilities to effectiveness. How to improve business without getting a bunch of old farts moving into town.

Here's what I would do. Instead of changing TWNBMB into a retirement community like the brain banks in Manitouwadge or Terrace Bay, I have the community change to be an educational centre in the midst of the Boreal Forest.

The idea comes from the deep south of the United States as it converted from an rural to an agrian technical based economy. As the family farms closed down local supply towns focused on turning into College Towns.

Indeed TWNBMB could change its name from "(that)" which was the name of the paper company, which deserted it in the worst economic situation, to "Goodchild's Bay".

It was the anglicized name of the place before the railway named it Peninsula. By restoring it to the original name, it will make good luck. TWNBMB carried the curse of a far away ancient battle where blood was spilled.

This would be the marketing reason as the community focusses on positioning itself as an education town. To accomplish this cheaply and efficiently, the semesters in Goodchild's Bay would be from May to the end of August and from September to mid December. The rest of the months would be hibernation.

Such an activity would be more cost effective, and attract more students and faculty. Creation of such a dedicated town could also mean lower tuition fees for poorer students.

The inactivity period from mid December to May means that students can get enough work in their hometowns without having to seek work in the competitive period of May to August. Having a working relationship with another University such as Lakehead University would mean that these students could compress their post secondary education from the standard four years for a basic to about three perhaps even two years.

This is important for medical students since they must go to university for almost a decade. By providing additional semesters these students could get to the finish line two years earlier than the standard educational format used now.

Having the season in summer means that international students would be more likely to come to town , because all the other universities are going through the summertime lull. The location of Goodchild's Bay, also means that international students could be attracted to the immediacy of the Canadian boreal forest unlike those universities located in larger cities.

There are other significant advantages for Goodchild's Bay to use that asymetrical working season. Great cost savings could be derived from having the facility mothballed during the winter months. Everything from the environment, energy, maintenance costs would be reduced which means a lower tuition for the attending students.

So Goodchild's Bay, formerly known as TWNBMB or "that town" would succeed if it worked to become a brand spanking new university town. Its new industry not resource, woodland, commercial or mining dependent but a long term economic strategy focussing on becoming an education centre.

Surrender

Tamils from Sri Lanka marched up onto the Gardiner last Sunday evening in a lunatic effort to convince the Canadian government to intercede and force the Sri Lankan armed forces into a cease fire. Such an effort seems a further futile action. The Canadian government possesses no real leverage with the Sri Lankan government.

The only reason to get involved is to save civilian life. For months we've been hearing from one side, and not the other.

First off. The present Sri Lankan government is democratically elected. The Tamil Tigers have never been.

Second. The Sri Lankan government is the internationally recognized governing body. The Tamil Tigers are a ruthless group of terrorists who claim to be fighting for a homeland. In actual fact, this matter is entirely an internal civil war.

Third. The Tamil Tigers claim that there is genocide and ethnic cleansing. Over two decades the Tamils conducted a terror campaign of suicide bombings, bank robberies, ethnic cleansing (expulsion of Islamic followers), murder, assassination in and outside Sri Lanka (Rajiv Ghandi). This campaign led to the international recognition of the Tigers are a terrorist organization. Further, the Tamil Tiger leaders are wanted for international crimes.

Fourth. Now the Tamil Tigers want a ceasefire mostly due to humanitarian reasons. In 2002, they got a ceasefire and could have negotiated from a position of strength. This they refused to do. The Sri Lankans now demand a full surrender, but have never said it would be unconditional surrender. The leader of the Tamil Tigers, V. Prabhakaran, doesn't qualify since he is the main target.

If their need for a ceasefire is based on humanitarian grounds why do they not save lives by surrendering. The war is lost.

Instead the Tigers draft young children into armed resistance. They have used child soldiers before but the ages on the front lines get younger. The older soldiers hide behind their own youth and civilians. If they have the best interests of their population then surrender is the only option. They have yet to ask any international mediator to negotiate a surrender.

And one must understand how seriously the Sri Lankans take this conflict. They are Buddhists not Christians, not Islamics, not Hindu. Individual soldiers get no access to self realization by engaging in warfare. For a Buddhist to give up the chance to join with the cosmos by becoming a soldier is a serious issue. They get no virgins. They get no glory. They want the head of Prabhakaran and they want an end to the war. It is a complete sacrifice. They must face reincarnation.

The Tamils in Canada plead for their families. No thought to be given to the tens of thousands of Sri Lankans who suffered at the hands of the Tigers they supported. They lost thousands of family members. Islamic Sri Lankans were expelled from their properties by the Tigers without notice, compensation, or remorse.

Help the Zingars

Zinghalese speaking peoples face severe discrimination in Canada. These people andtheir ancient language evolved in Asia, specifically the home of the Zingars or the peoples of the Five and half tails. Their story is not that unusual.

In the last century, 1999, covert armies expelled them from a genocidal ethnic cleansing of their homeland near the city of Balinakkutuur in central Asia. The majority of the population became international refugees fleeing for their lives in a cruel world. All of them applied for refugee status in Canada.

The twenty four surviving Zingars were accepted and moved to the Canadian refugee camp most people call Surrey, British Columbia. Instantly clashed the cultures. This cultural difference erupted in uncalled for repression from the Canadian government. The instrument of repression came the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Lawyers clashed in the courts over the traditional costume of the Zingars.

Help the Zingars keep their ceremonial dress and their cultural and religious rights. The legal arguments were long and involved but basically boiled down to this. Why should the Sikhs be allowed to keep their ceremonial daggers called Kirpans, in school? Zingars were not allowed the same rights in public or private schools. The same law should also apply equally to the Zingar children at school, they should be allowed to keep their ceremonial AK-47's.

Values

Ambling down for breakfast, I always walk by this 1985 VW Jetta. Its a nice looking car mind you. The owner put a anti-theft bar thing on the steering wheel. The anti-bar theft thing is probably worth as much as the present blue book value of the car.

The threat of theft long past. There isn't much demand for a 1985 car on the black market.

In the National Hockey League (NHL), there is this team called the Toronto Maple Leafs. They sell out almost every home night. They have the highest ticket prices in the world. And even with a depression working in the economy, the owners found cause to raise them another three percent in the coming year. They haven't played in the post season in five or six years, like who's counting. Its been so long that the players on the team think playoff, is a russian hockey player.

Why bother such a team? Its values. That ticket is a must buy in the community.

Sticking with absurd values, and the NHL, a team called the Phoenix Coyotes who also haven't been to the playoffs suddenly went bankrupt. In stepped a man called Jim Balsillie (pronounced balls-lee) who owns Research In Motion (RIM) the Blackberry franchiser, offered a bid of $212 Million dollars towards purchase and movement of the team. This is violently opposed by the instransigent little weasel commissioner of the NHL Gary Bettman.

At the present moment the real value of the Coyotes is probably less than $100M. That is being generous because in reality, as an asset they are really worth squat. Bettman and Balsillie have been here and done that twice before. No one in their right mind would pay for a hockey franchise let alone over two hundred million. Like I said its all about values.

May the fourth be with you

Looking up some statitististics recently. This is the day to begin the long road to political independence from southern Ontario. Reason. People can remember this day.

A creation of that province of Northern Ontario by whatever name would create the 7th largest province within Confederation. With the resources found and still to be discovered, this political entity could survive economically if not better. We wouldn't be sending our hard won tax money to the softies surrounding Queer's Park. So much for the first argument by the people who oppose such independent action.

The opponents work from self interest, greed, and simple laziness. As for the border, where does Northern Ontario begin? Let's say the French River with the exception of North Bay which is a southern Ontario colony having elected sell-out politicians over the recent years.

The Northern areas aren't unified. This is true. It is necessary for the First Nations and other heritages to work together recognizing the rights, the needs and the respect for others. This would be the focus of future political action, for the short term. There is room enough for all, and working together success assured.

Use today to think about Northern Ontario land. May the fourth is the day to mark.

Up thar!

Today begins the ambivalence towards the warming climate. No joy in this. No traffic either.

The authorities shut down a major highway intercourse to fix the drain pipes. Catch basins they officially call them.

A ten kilometer race must be run down the major street called Yonge Street. It started three hours ago. It must be over by now. Why the hell with all these streets, in a city no less, must these spandex clowns run down a major street?

Such actions reduce the number of cars in the downtown area drastically. I crossed Queen Street under the mid morning sun. The only direction I had to watch out for was up. Pigeons.

Cuckoo over the Flu Nest... ep. 02

What remains befuddling is the hard shot against Mexico but little against the United States. If Canada was alone attacked, the H1N1 flu could be stopped. Travel warnings have been issued against Mexico but none against the USA.

Remind yourself that during the SARS scare, the United States government issued a travel warning against all Canada coast to coast. Since the health system in the United States is antiquated in global terms, any infiltration of a contagion moves quickly into the that population. Public health has unique advantages.

By all rights with the United States having about 50% of the confirmed cases of H1N1 flu, travel warnings to the United States should be issued. The Harper government lacks the balls to do that. They've been neutered since the swearing in ceremony. Simply ban travel or issue a quarantine

The Chinese government has it right. All travelers from Mexico now will be in quarantine for a week. Now that should slow the spread of the virus.

Pointings on May

His fresh half case of beer swung pendulating to a stuttering gait. Remnants of shoe leather slapped on the ground. Unwashed pants and jacket hung tired from his body. It was the beginning of the month. More money.

Not money for shoes, or pants, or jacket. Money enough for beer. He thought he was doing okay.

Cool baskets

Despite the cold temperatures tough Canadian youth in Toronto manage to play a pick up game of basketball. They cleaned off the snow on the outside courts. Toronto, a typical Canadian city, anticipates all the snow to leave the ground by mid-June.

After the game, the players put their parkas back on as they group marched to a local pub for the post game coffees. Its a time honoured tradition. Later they will go home to their igloos and wives to happily tell the story of this game.

Cuckoo over the Flu Nest

A movie must be made of this. The World Health Organization must be run by a committee of doctors who lack the ability to distinguish between the words "ambulance" and "ambivalence". The world needs an ambulance and they sent the latter.

Any freshly discovered disease should have triggered alarm bells. A pandemic stance should be adopted and then relaxed. They relaxed and then they appear to panic. A week ago little was known about the little virus that could.

Now more is known. Its an H1N1 virus commonly called Swine Flu. And nothing could be worse than to call it that. The appropriate name should have been something like Vera Cruz A.

Here's the reason. First off. They didn't exactly know the vectors then, and from all appearances they still don't. One would think that if it was possible for this virus could come from swine to human, it could also be possible for the virus to exist in another species. Mexico has a lot of species. According to testing, the likely origin of the virus has no virus activity in the local domestic pigs.

Wild pigs called Peccaries also exist in Mexico. When it comes to a virus no one really knows until much later when detailed study can be afforded. Eventually the viral vectors will be known but not likely in a short time. Every expert though, skirts around the issue that the virus effects only those Nahuaa seriously. Only people of Mexican Ameri-Indian heritage seem to be dying in any numbers. And that is interesting.

Another large issue with WHO is their assertion that travel bans and restrictions don't stop the virus. They are right in that way, but the goal is to slow the progress down. It buys time to build and produce a vaccine. Time also reduces plague by reducing the sheer quantity of illness and improving the virus mutations to a milder version. WHO is idiots, that's who.

However, the principle quirk of H1N1 class of virus. Simply banning sick people who show symptoms is too late. The disease has a very long primary phase where no symptoms show but has already achieved a high degree of contagiousness. In other words, when it shows, its already too late. You can wear masks but the simple patch mask shown worn by so many people don't work.

The very strange possibility for this virus is that this virus may be genetically selective. American First Nations called the Nahua seem the most susceptible. Youth seem very vulnerable. WHO stated that this may be the first genuine pandemic in forty years. It may be the first virulent form of "A" flu in forty years.

Any one who is older than 1964 carries a definite level of immunity or capability of coping with the disease because it was around the last time this type of pandemic occurred. I myself suffered considerably by several rounds of Type "A" Flu, then.

And back then, a lot of people did not know how to cope with influenza. There wasn't the social supports surrounding people back then. People still went to work ill. There wasn't a concept of sick days. People got fired for being sick and absent from work. Now most of society knows that when an individual becomes sick, stay home til you're better.

Also vaccines were cruder and not as effective back then. Many flu shots weren't the right type for the year. Modern mass communication alerts the social members into being proactive. Many more people get flu shots. This gives some protection by simply keeping the immune system active.

Despite the prevalence of junk foods today. When ill people change to the correct diet to cope. And those foods, select vegetables and fruits are available. Forty years ago, year round fresh fruits weren't always available.

Yes this round of influenza will be serious but not as bad as what the media loves to portray. If you do feel ill, put the feet up, keep and drink a large quantity of non-alcoholic beverage next to your sleeping hulk, and call in sick.

Patently obvious

Money slated for Toronto transit street cars may not come from the federal government. They are using the need for a quick plan of revitalization to make jobs. The feds promised the money,

Well that's the excuse. Throw in a couple of million bucks extra and things do go faster. Its business that the Cornservatives claim to know and understand.

The real reason for the reversal lies with Thunder Bay. Figure this out. They voted Liveral and for the Gnu Dummercrats.

Of course the Cornservatives did not come out and directly state that they wouldn't fund it. They let everyone hang. They will likely hold Thunder Bay to political ransom if they don't vote for the Cornservatives.

You know them TWNBMB. They were the ones that rescued their buddies on Bay Street who didn't know how to run banks but are employed by the corporate shareholders anyway. They the same government that spends billions smacking down poor turbined headed hill billies instead of funding rescue packages for their very own people.

So the Cornservatives figure not to fund the TTC streetcars til after the next general election which should be about 12 months from now if schedules being what they are. Toronto really doesn't need new street cars. They don't need street cars at all. Street cars congest traffic and are not efficient modes of public transit.

But the Cornservatives need a vote getter in Thumder Bay. The gun registry failed. Coopting the senile Comuzzi into the Cornservative fold did not work. But holding all of Tunder Bay to ransom might work. Worth a try.

Call me HN1 1N1, Call me collect, free delivery

Influenza sprung from the swamps of the ancient Aztec capital. Sweeping aside medical screens the virus sneaks inside future human corpses from the ponds of the temple to the far corners of Earth. Carried on the comfortable wings of Airbus and Boeing birds the tiny creatures penetrate all boundaries. Undertakers turn on the crematoria furnaces with grim faces and smiling hearts. Hail the coming contagion.

Contagion rules billions of quivering mutant primates accustomed to a cushion between their world and the real. They wait in constructions. Hiding eyes. Pleading to dying ears, “I'm not sick! I'm not sick.”

Underlining this lies the consummate insult. If contagion rises in Asia, it is called Hong Kong, Shanghai or Beijing Flu. Now, it rises in the nation of Mexico and called Swine Flu.

Towards a point in history

A war lost. Sitting with the Indian Ocean at their backs, at this moment the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Elam defend nothing more than a thin beach. Trapped with them are civilians. Victory for the Sri Lankan army appears certain.

If there is a proper way to end a civil war, the American Civil War seems the best demonstration. Upon surrender, mercy and clemency was shown to the losers. Part of the resistance to surrender on the part of the LTTE must be fear.

Many of the followers are Hindu, and all these familiar with the Baghavad Gita. Winning and losing matters little. Their defeat may indeed be written. They have a choice of sending out all those souls who are noncombatants if they chose. How one loses a battle, is more important than the victor's celebration.

Many of the Sri Lankan army holds the Buddhist Path. Doing the right thing solidifies that spiritual foundation. A victory is the same as a loss. The battle will be over. The war will be over. But there is history that will remember.

Anyone can start a war. This is easy to do. Ending a war, doesn't end with a treaty. It ends with blood lust being replaced by compassion and mercy. Victory comes to both sides after a long time of peace. Ending a war, is a very hard, a very long, and very worthwhile thing to do. Peace requires more courage than within battle.

Saved by the boom

Yesterday was a good day to be a roofing contractor. A storm swept through the city in the early, early evening. High winds ripped tiles off roofs, knocked out street lights, toppled trees, downed lines, and lifted those light fabric spring skirts.

People started the day anticipating a brilliant warm spring day. They got out and spent money. To finish the day with a storm is a definite plus to the local economies. People scrambled for cover. Dinners served cold making it a green day for the environment. It was a green day for the economy. Saturday gave the kind of day that is good for everything.

Told you so 1.

Memory lane here. Elections are not democracy in action. Instead they provide the mechanism for representative democracy. Its a farm run by turkeys.

One of those I told you so moments just came through. I had helped this particular person to win election in TWNBMB. The person was a capable administrator of the little empire but failed to provide a leader like vision for the community. One of the issues that I thought the council failed to understand was the fragility of northern economies.

The Ontario government was looking for sites for summer time casinos. At the time there mounted a strong opposition to the plan to put one in TWNBMB. Apparently, the presence of a gambling hall was beneath the moral level of the community. And the noses pierced the fucking stratosphere.

My point was that there wasn't a line for morality in the tax form. It would help stabilize the local economy. Diversity is the secret. Now TWNBMB was the same town that allowed a pedophile to run it for a dozen or so years. They preached morality?

I told the mayor that someday the mill and the mine might close. The presence of a casino would help diversify the retail sector. They closed their ears to the suggestion.

Anyhow. Ahem... Told you so. :))

Torrentrial Downpour

Came into the world today on the way to breakfast. Left the repast thinking there wasn't all that much to write about. Wrong oh. There are two major developments.

In the Pirate Bay case. Last week, the recording industry cheered as the executives of the Swedish website Pirate Bay faced imprisonment. Greed satiated by fair public trial. But one big screw up now faces Swedish justice. This just out into the news.

The judge, Tomas Norstram, failed to disclose before trial that he was a current member of two Swedish copyright association. And three representatives of the plaintiff companies, also happened to be members of the very same association.

Europeans have been very quick to state that the justice system of other nations was corrupt and biased. Pointy fingers waved at the United States court system.

Norstram stated that he didn't see any conflict of interest in this. Call it a hunch. I don't think the Swedish Supreme Court will see it exactly that way. A Supreme Court of any nation seeks to protect the integrity of its judicial image. Norstram could very well state that he is an unbiased neutral observer. To say that the fact of his association membership doesn't shed bias on the trial proves nothing, shows if not corrupt, the guy is a moron. It was a bonehead decision not to disclose this membership as a factual statement before trial.

At the very least, it will be a new trial.

Every day work

Only have a few moments. A portal in wireless cyberspace magically opened this morning. As a result, the time for portal use seems limited.

Can you remember times past when all the Canadian teams were dropping out of the Stunly Cup playoffs, one could really on Montreal Canadiens carrying the flag deep into the brackets. Not this time.

For the first time in mega centuries Boston Bruins busted the mighty Canadiens, sweeping them Montrealers out in four straight games. How freaking embarrasing. I believe that only leaves Vancoolver and Cowhellgary in the playoffs. There things don't look good. Vancoolver has Mutts Sundin.

And remember, here be a piece of advice. Take the town clown seriously. Unlike most. He still works everyday.

Foralaji

Types of cars say a lot about the owners. Walked by a carefully detailed BMW SUV this morning. Shiny black finish glowing impressively. White plop of bird poop on the rear panel. A moment of fiscal justice.

**==***

Ivy looks wonderful on buildings. Green against the red brick. People new to a large city buy these buildings. Old home owners know better. The roots of the ivy feeds on brick mortar. Costs thousands to fix every two decades. Looks nice.

====

Don't buy a building with painted brick. After two decades the brick crumbles. It needs to breathe.

All these have hidden subtexts. But today I don't want to figure those out.

Scare a decade

This year is the year. Its ten years after. Ten years ago, this coming December was "00/00/00" and the great Y2K scare.

We should plan an online celebration that momentous day. At "10/00/00" at 23:59hrs UMT (Greenwich Mean...), . Everyone who has an internet connection should send a group email to all their contacts. All within the same minute.

We need a cause. This is to back the censorship of the old money thieves of the recording companies agains Pirate Bay. Its a protest. The Pirate Bay is only one sore point. Greed seems to be taking over the internet when originally it was supposed to be commercial free. We can do this.

And if asked before hand or warned by authorities. Simply say no that you aren't going to do it. Just get online at one minute before midnight UMT (1859 EST) this coming Dec 31 and send out at least one email preferably a group. The email can say anything. eg. Happy New Year

Wheee... Fun.

(18:59 hrs) EST

Rudimentary my dear Whatson

Tides can change a war or conflict. The Tamils are losing the war in Sri Lanka finally in a bloody final standoff. The "west friendly" Afghan government is about to implement a law that will out Taliban the Taliban.

Questions always arose as to the worthiness of the Afghan mission. Adrift in violence for centuries the long isolated Afghani are descending back into the Dark Ages no matter the political structure. The Afghan government selectively decided to implement a law that states a woman cannot turn down sex to her husband. Other associated loss of rights are included but this one clause points to the mentality of all male political leaders in Afghanistan. Basically after all this enlightened dying, half the population wouldn't have any human rights.

Almost 120 Canadians died to ensure that the Afghan people, not their government, possesses individual rights above the political and judicial process. Even Nazi Germany didn't go this far. If the law is passed by the Afghan legislative council, Canada shouldn't wait two years before withdrawing its troops.

He's back! The immortal mad monk.

This wasn't my idea. One very intellectual friend* looked at a picture of Ovechkin during the hockey replays. He said that "They must be related. He looks like..."

Scary. He does.

Pictures don't lie. Rasputin's back from the dead!!!

* "...Grigori Rasputin. It explains everything."

Update - Misappointment

A misappointment is like a disappointment but not as serious. It is no surprise at all.

Mel Gibson the self righteous got served with divorce papers via his lawyers. Apparently, this has been two years or more in the works. Gibson received the news according to the gossip papers while in Costa Rica busing with blondie.

The first Oksana was not 25 as per her Wikipedia of yesterday but 31 years old. Then again Russians are on the metric system. Different calendars and watches are needed in that system. It was a development that P.E. Trudeau never anticipated. He was into metric screws in a big way.

Yes the first Oksana in the previous post, declared that she was now married and preggers. She did not say who the father was though. According to her she gave Mel a private piano recital.

The second Oksana yelped that she was the one that Mel had a thing for. They were serious. The only problem with serious was that according to the rumor mongers, she was not in Costa Rica for the divorce squeezings.

When one part of trash hits the sidewalk, it seems all the trash makes it out to the curb side. Mel allegedly has had about six affairs within the last two years. This includes a Costa Rican vacation for Britney who uses the last name Spears. Spears by the coincident way... a bleach blonde.

Robyn Gibson nee Moore, understands the issue. Half his fortune will be gone for all the philandering. He wasn't even quite discreet about it. Its a case from courtship to court.

Morality and the uncommon

It seems that morality shifts for the extremely devout, when inconvenienced. Mel Gibson will get an annulment from the Catholic Church. His wife of 28 years, Robyn Moore, happens to be an Anglican future ex-wife headed for divorce court.

Despite proclaiming to the world several years ago just about what a great guy he is, what a great family guy he is, and what a beacon of morality he was. He fooled around with several mistresses since he sent Christ to the cinema.

Gibson seems to favor Russians recently for his amours. According to the Canberra Times, the female companion on Gibson's recent vacation in Costa Rica went by the name of Oksana Kolesnikova. The British tabloids claimed that the dish served hot was Oksana Prochepa.

Now lets have a lineup. Both go by the name Oksana. Since Gibson obviously is a Conservative type. He will pick a blonde for a mistress. If he fools around buying jewelry for Oksana will be easier to hide if all of his paramours are Oksana. Not a bad plan.

A plan except for the paparazzi who manage to fly all over the place following people of notoriety. And a person who makes their living by having fame, cannot exactly turn it off at a convenience. The first and second pics are of Koleniskova. The next two are of Procepa. It is for your edification of course.

Now the confusion reigns while Mel hits the legal business that will deprive him of at least one half of his present assets. Lots of speculation exists on just which is the unlucky girl.

Personal choice aside the females are neither forthcoming with denials. Indeed both appear to be claiming the prize. Prochepa claims the relationship is "serious". Koleniskova does likewise by saying Oksana is such a common name in Russia. However, this was an Oksana in Costa Rica. Maybe there was two?

Both are about the same age, 25 and 24 respectively. Both are chanteuses which is fancy talk for singers. Both would interact in the glamor world accessible by the world's elite. While these photos compare a remarkably similar hair style, the Costa Rica vamp was more brown hair.

Sigh. It is too bad the guys on the bottom of the social ladder can see the reality of this situation. Gibson is an old guy. The only difference is that he is a rich, and old guy. The common man must look on in an envy tempered with a touch of approval. The gold diggers march on over the corpses of the old and stupid. In this we recall the sorry tale of Paul McCartney who must know that if he were poor he sleeps alone. Heather Mills got more out of him than he bargained. Gibson did not have a prenuptial agreement. Its all for love. The rich old guys like to screw the young things and the young things like to screw back. And this circle happily revolves into tomorrow.

Gibson appears not to have been burdened with the detail that he broke God's Covenant. He apparently missed the point of the movies that he made. He is not only an actor. Like any complex person, he does possess other unrelated talents.

Most of Gibson's wealth began with acting but the bulk of his present fortune now comes from wise real estate investments. It helps to have the down in cash.

Usually Gibson portrayed heroes. So much did he, it might have tarnished the view of himself. Had he stuck to acting instead of laying a layer of self righteous religious morality schtick, then few if any observers would be inwardly amused by the widespread public decline of his image.

It must confuse some who tie their beliefs of a person's character to an on screen portrayal by an actor. Devoted fans often attach the morality of the play's or movie's principal character to that of the offstage character of the performer. How often have we seen where actors seem to acquire those traits. Caroll O'Conner, who portrayed Archie Bunker, was beloved by Republicans despite the fact that O'Conner lined up with the left wing of the Democratic Party offscreen. He was a beacon of liberal thinking who had conservative devotees.

Mel Gibson is no William Wallace. Wallace endured privation, hardship and a tortured execution. to secure the identity of the Scottish nation to this very day some 700 years later. His was a life of deed. Gibson on the other hand appears now a self centered hypocrite who lacked the courage and selflessness to remain chaste and true to his vows. Its an interesting flow of events.

What moral possessed Gibson to lay out a lifestyle and not adhere to it? Its difficult to believe that Gibson thought he could get away with a public image of virtuosity, yet keep up a randy private life hidden from exposure. Assign that attitude to a level of extreme arrogance.

Of course, I must confess. Confession is good for the soul. You listening Mel?

Normally I couldn't give a flying floo-doo about Mel Gibson's personal life. However, it gives a damn good excuse to include the pictures of a couple of very pretty girls in this blig. Every blig needs this sort of thing every so often. It keeps interest says a confidant. Use graphics he says. I am. I am.

Save dis mutt.

Look into those eyes. This lost puppy is yet to find a proper home. Rescued from the cruel life of the stuffed puppy mill in a carnival this poor little guy remains alone although in a safe place. Everyone in that house denies knowing, or acknowledging just who the owner is.

The Toronto Humane Society rejected the appeal to have them find a place for this little guy. They are big into biologicals in a discriminating way. Send your support, email, spiritual or really appreciated is financial and I will forward it onto this poor, frail, lonely little dog.

Blag updates - New series

A new series is coming to this blog. This blog is the "only" source for an author who uses the pen name "D'Committio". One easily understands the reasons of another name when you, the reader understands the subject of this author. Its to protect. Its to use.

The focus of D'Committio concerns the prevalent influence over the Canadian political scene by a little known secret society called the "Aluminanutti". Readers are not to copy or distribute this material since widespread knowledge could lead to the demise of this courageous author.

You may have read some of this author's work in other places. You wouldn't know exactly due to the depth of security within which this person must work. She or he is an insider in the exact position to know. By spreading the plans of the Aluminanutti, this person seeks to counteract the power of this secret organization.

D'Committio told me in a secret email a few days ago... A lotto thingsa dey do issa very bad. A lotto thingsa dey do issa good. Itta depends on which way the toiletta spinsa dere buddy.

Kuebler reinstated

Apparently a military justice agreed with this blag and other expert legal opinion. Lt. Cmdr William Kuebler's fierce defense of Omar Khadr earned the wrath of his commanding officer. Kuebler appealed to the justices on the hearing. And they agreed that only Khadr, the defendent, possessed the legitimate power to fire a defense attorney.

Khadr and others (with the exception of the US Department of the Navy) appear impressed with the unforgiving vigor of Kuebler's defense of Khadr. Colonel Masciola presented Kuebler as incompetent dispite the obvious fact that Kuebler frustrated the kangaroo nature of Masciola's position.

Colonel Masciola represents the Pentagon's choice to defend Khadr. Perplexingly Masciola is also the senior officer in charge of the prosecution of Khadr. He is both accuser and defender. It is a strange arrangement hatched by the Pentagon brain trust. Masciola drips with conflicting interests. His career only benefits if he manages to have Khadr hang. Kuebler on the other hand leads an able defense of Khadr.

Masciola and the Pentagon chose Lt. Cmdr William Kuebler because this man is a Republican, and a deeply religious Christian, a man of the right kind of morals. At first view, this would be the complete worst person to represent Khadr. But what has confounded his superior officers is that Kuebler also possesses a deeply seated sense of ethics. It must be a sense of ethics that most of the US Department of the Navy lacks. Kuebler believes that he must defend Khadr with enthusiastic vigor in the trueist definition of democratic justice, despite the difference in cultural views and despite the fact that Khadr is for all tenses an enemy of the United States.

Kuebler appears to be one of those rare individuals with very strong sense of morality. Khadr seems to respond positively to this honesty wishing that Kuebler continue to be his defense attorney. I know my opinion counts for little. But I am overwhelming glad this person continues.
Someday William Kuebler must run for the office of President of the United States. He is the right stuff.
