Dubious merits

Prime Minister Stephen Harper reluctantly called two byelections for Sept. He waited until the very last day to call them. Vacant seats cannot defeat his government. The momentum gains against the presence of Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

For the longest time the Conservatives tried to spin the idea that our reluctance in further participation is equal to nonsupport of the troops. They play on guilt. Unfortunately, Canadians are coming to the conclusion that it may be time for other Nato partners to put up. We've done our share.

Maximum incompetent commanding General Hillier who seems to swim in the glory of being a wartime general, came out with the comment within this day that Canada should stay longer. The reason is that the Afghanistan Army won't be ready. This revelation came less than 48 hours after a command change in theater where the combat general said that the Canadian contingent was to be held in reserve since the Afghan Army was now ready to carry the load. Can anyone else detect the ever present disconnect?

Our Canadian soldiers have been fighting and dying in Afghanistan for almost six years now. Why doesn't anyone (primarily the loyal opposition and the media) ever ask the obvious question: 'How the Hell long does it take to recruit, equip and train a damned army?'

The Afghans seem to be great soldiers when it comes to killing Canadians, other NATO troops and women and children. Why can't they be great soldiers and defend their own country?

Thanks to a rare fit of courage and common sense from the federal Liberals, our brave and dedicated soldiers are not suffering and dying in Iraq but the same question applies to that conflict as well.

We did our job. We deposed and killed most of the Taliban who were in power when 9/11 occurred. We did our best to help them rebuild their country.

Now it's time to get the hell out of that slaughterhouse. The longer we stay, the more Afghans join the Taliban, the more Canadians who die for nothing.

Enough is enough! If we end up eventually having to go back and kick the crap out of them again, so be it. Right now, we need to withdraw --- immediately!!!!
